Yes, that's right folks, the triumphant return of Mynydd Seren's Medieval Book Club is slated for October 2008! Save the date because on October 10-12 Mynydd Seren will follow the journeys of Clever Odysseus through Classical Greece! There will be camping, there will be feasting (featuring yours truly and the lovely Valeria as feastocrats), fencing in high Mynydd Seren style, there will be armored combat, there will be bardic, drinking, A&S, dancing, a group campfire, and of course, some good-old-classical Grecian buggery!
Erm. Right. Scratch that last bit from the official announcement. The SCA Inc does not promote or encourage sexual activities (especially those of dubious legal status) at its events. |

The following story will seem touching to some, wretchedly morbid and creepy to others. But it is a tribute, and it should be known, I think.
The day after Christmas, 2006, my step-father Doff passed away from cancer. He and I had a tumultuous relationship, but he was a good man. He was good to my mother and loved us both unconditionally. He taught me a great deal about tolerating and even appreciating different types of people--even backwoods good-ol'-boys from Ay-dee-ho.
He died sooner than we had expected--at home, wrapped up in his favorite red velvet comforter.
When my mom was sorting through his things, she couldn't bear to throw out the comforter. She asked me if I had a use for it...to make something out of it, or give it to someone else. Otherwise, she told me, she would give it to Goodwill.
I couldn't let it go to Goodwill, so I took it. And so it has sat for nearly a year in my basement, waiting for inspiration.
About a month and a half ago, that inspiration finally struck...
The Midrealm's coronation is this upcoming weekend. It will mark the last day I serve as Kingdom Rapier Champion. Of course, I wanted a new gown to wear. Over the last month, I have labored tediously over this gown--many of you have seen me beading and stitching pieces of rich red velvet. During that time, I reflected on Doff, on other loved ones passed on, and on those in my life today who I cherish and who are, relations or not, family.
Today I finished the gown and matching cap. It is a bittersweet victory.
Christmas was Doff's favorite holiday...and was effectively his last day alive. It is fitting, I think, that the dress is reminiscent of the holiday. And I think he would be tickled to know that I, "damned Berkeley liberal" that I am, hacked to bits no fewer than six rabbit pelts to trim the gown. I think it a fitting tribute.
Below are a few photos.

With a whopping 5 days warning, today I find out that I am in fact teaching next semester. And teaching an entirely different class than I taught last semester. So. I have 5 days to write a syllabus, create a lesson plan for the first week or two, and choose the readings.
Fun. A chinchilla will help. |

Greetings from the the hellish midsts of my PhD exams. All consuming, soul eating experience. Immersion in a pile of books, concepts, examples, polyphonic voices whispering through the din of fears and vapid insecurities. Waltzing with knowledge on the teetering precipice of madness.
But I'm rocking the exam. |

| Invention of Culture--For Ye Social Scientists |
[Sep. 19th, 2007|01:20 pm] |
I was complaining to Adam (Warder-Baron, not Wadam) about a recalcitrant paragraph in my dissertation proposal, an illusive bit of wisdom briefly surveying the literature on the invention of culture and tradition in social scientific research. He offered, ever so kindly, to help, being the helpful sort that he is.
Ever wondered what happens when a structural biologist invents culture?
I quote: "The invention of culture, as opposed to the proto-ideals of an ensemble of individuals, has been characterized by a variety of authors. Most authors focus on the evolution or creation of a culture as an offshoot from a pre-existing ontological entity (e.g. Roman co-option of the Grecian ideal, Puritan revision of Georgian England, Romanticization of the Medieval period by the Victorians) and tend to describe what the invented culture is within the framework of what it is not. The exceptions to this generalization, by comparison, attempt to define cultural invention from some set of externally and post-facto defined first principles. These Etherists - for they postulate that one can define the creation of culture "from the ether" - hold that culture can be redacted back to a small but carefully circumscribed gestalt which binds the agreeable individuals together into a class which is wholly satisfied within that definition. The Directionists - their postulation being that all culture must come "based on where they started" - argue against these Etherists and state that a culture is made of both positive and negative space -- what they are and what they are not. Interestingly, it could be argured that there is a third caste rarely voiced within the literature, the Marginalists, wherein each culture breeds multitudinal proto-cultures at the divide between the accepted and forbidden behavior. The Marginalists have much in common with the Directionists in that positive and negative cultural space is required, but also share the idealism of the Etherists in that the proto-culture will often self-identify as a wholly-formed, Protean melange which is not that which was. I will explore all three of these definitions in my own work, enumerating both compared and contrasted points of distinction and showcasing how, in fact, each school of thought has failed to account for the whole aspect-world of the invention of culture."
What do you think guys? Think it will fly? |
